Thinking Pumpkin poster by Yayoi Kusama — The unusual title Thinking Pumpkin gives the vegetable the suggestion of an inner life. Its rounded form becomes almost character-like, encouraging a playful comparison between plant and person.

A pumpkin given a personality

Kusama has often described pumpkins as warm, humorous and human-like. This title makes that anthropomorphic quality especially vivid, offering more than a purely decorative fruit motif.

Pumpkin imagery and enduring affection

Growing up in Japan, Kusama encountered pumpkins among the plants around her family home. Their irregular ribs and rounded shape appealed to her, and their surfaces became ideal for the graphic contrasts and recurring dots that later defined many of her artworks.
