Pumpkin (RYSQ) framed print by Yayoi Kusama — With Pumpkin (RYSQ), the repetition of Kusama’s best-known subject becomes part of the subject itself. Returning to a pumpkin does not mean making the same picture again.

Small formal choices, a different pumpkin

The RYSQ designation separates this work from Kusama’s numerous yellow, red and dark-ground pumpkins. Her ongoing return to this subject expresses both experimentation and emotional attachment.

Red and yellow as a lively conversation

Curved organic contours contrast with the ordered beat of repeated surface marks. The motif feels at once friendly, eccentric and visually complex.

Pumpkin (RYSQ) is a documented 1998 screenprint in which a yellow, dotted pumpkin is set against a red patterned field. The color relationship feels active and celebratory, and the repeated dots within the gourd echo the linear net-like shapes behind it. This makes the background essential to the picture rather than simply a neutral space around the main subject.
