Pumpkin (GT) framed print by Yayoi Kusama — In Pumpkin (GT), the familiar pumpkin silhouette becomes a framework for Kusama’s pattern language. The regularity of repeated dots contrasts with the vegetable’s uneven, organic ridges.

Dots across a living form

Kusama has returned to the pumpkin since childhood. The GT code is kept because it identifies this particular rendition rather than a generic pumpkin print.

Pumpkin imagery and enduring affection

Growing up in Japan, Kusama encountered pumpkins among the plants around her family home. Their irregular ribs and rounded shape appealed to her, and their surfaces became ideal for the graphic contrasts and recurring dots that later defined many of her artworks.
