Papillon II (Amour pour Toujours) poster by Yayoi Kusama — Papillon II from Amour pour Toujours explores the butterfly as a symbol of delicacy and transformation. Kusama turns the wings into an opportunity for patterned repetition and bold graphic contrast.

Butterfly motif from the Love Forever portfolio

The insect’s naturally mirrored wings make it a compelling balance between symmetry and decorative variation.

Artwork Background and Meaning

This work belongs to Kusama’s Amour pour Toujours (“Love Forever”), a 2000 portfolio of ten screenprints that revisits pairs of hats, pumpkins, fruit baskets, butterflies and tulips. The individual works should be understood as parts of that specific portfolio.

Display Ideas

The nature-based motif works particularly well among botanical art, design objects and other pieces that share its sense of organic movement.
