Shanghai Pumpkin framed print by Yayoi Kusama — Shanghai Pumpkin places Kusama’s emblematic gourd into a distinctly titled variation. The familiar segmented vegetable remains a point of recognition while the artwork’s personality emerges through surface repetition.

A pumpkin with a place name

This is a separately identified work in print catalogues and the market, not another generic yellow-pumpkin image. Its name is retained because the place reference forms part of the artwork’s identity.

Pumpkin imagery and enduring affection

Growing up in Japan, Kusama encountered pumpkins among the plants around her family home. Their irregular ribs and rounded shape appealed to her, and their surfaces became ideal for the graphic contrasts and recurring dots that later defined many of her artworks.
