Pumpkin God [Kusama 183] canvas print | Yayoi Kusama Canvas Print | Yayoi Kusama Prints

Pumpkin God [Kusama 183] canvas print by Yayoi Kusama — An elongated, almost monumental pumpkin appears in orange dotted lines against a dense black field woven with orange net shapes. The fluted body rises like a strange botanical figure, giving the familiar gourd an imposing personality.

When a pumpkin becomes an icon

Known as Pumpkin God, this 1993 screenprint elevates an ordinary vegetable into an emblem. Kusama’s humor and devotion to the motif coexist with a near-iconic sense of presence.

Pumpkin imagery and enduring affection

Growing up in Japan, Kusama encountered pumpkins among the plants around her family home. Their irregular ribs and rounded shape appealed to her, and their surfaces became ideal for the graphic contrasts and recurring dots that later defined many of her artworks.
