Pumpkin (BT) framed print | Yayoi Kusama Framed Print | Yayoi Kusama Prints

Pumpkin (BT) framed print by Yayoi Kusama — The catalogue code BT distinguishes this pumpkin from Kusama’s many other gourds. The subject’s full-bodied contours invite the repeated dots to wrap around its form rather than sit merely on top of it.

A pumpkin defined by its own code

Kusama’s pumpkins are often discussed in terms of warmth and individuality. One simple shape can generate numerous visual identities through variations in color, outline and dot structure.

Pumpkin imagery and enduring affection

Growing up in Japan, Kusama encountered pumpkins among the plants around her family home. Their irregular ribs and rounded shape appealed to her, and their surfaces became ideal for the graphic contrasts and recurring dots that later defined many of her artworks.
