Pumpkin (2) [Kusama 144] canvas print by Yayoi Kusama — A pumpkin becomes a character-like form rather than an anonymous vegetable in Pumpkin (2). Its rounded segments provide a natural structure for the dots and repeating details that Kusama loves.

A pumpkin with its own personality

The numbered reference identifies this particular pumpkin image among the many she has created. Her attachment to pumpkins grew from childhood experiences with plants and her admiration for their approachable, humorous forms.

Pumpkin imagery and enduring affection

Growing up in Japan, Kusama encountered pumpkins among the plants around her family home. Their irregular ribs and rounded shape appealed to her, and their surfaces became ideal for the graphic contrasts and recurring dots that later defined many of her artworks.
