Lemon Squash (2) (Alternate File 2) framed print by Yayoi Kusama — A glass of lemon squash sits within a patterned field, with the drink’s outline interrupted by repeated spots. In the documented 1999 version, lemon yellow and green play against a reddish net backdrop, giving a simple refreshment a surprising graphic energy.

A drink turned into a patterned still life

Kusama takes an ordinary drink and converts it into a dense arrangement of repeated shapes. The circular lemon slice, dotted glass and surrounding web connect the object to the artist’s wider vocabulary of nets and polka dots.

Ordinary things, extraordinary surfaces

Fruit, drink and tableware make striking partners for Kusama’s repeated patterns. The combination of a recognizable everyday subject with dense graphic decoration is central to the charm and complexity of her printmaking.
